About Manufacturer
Frank Roberts, an industrial designer, hurt his back while playing tennis in 1970. He was taken to the hospital and kept in traction for a month. This was not the first time he had experienced back discomfort, but it was the most severe, and he was urged to have surgery to prevent recurrence. Before acting on this advise, he decided to look into the outcomes of back procedures through a variety of sources, including the Workers' Compensation Board's files, and learned that many people had been operated on multiple times without their back pain being relieved.
A body cast was constructed while he was in traction. To his surprise, he discovered that immobilising and resting the spine relieved the discomfort. When the cast was removed, though, the soreness reappeared. He couldn't sit up for more than a few minutes at a time. Work was a shambles. He required a device that would allow him to sit up comfortably, and he tried a variety of traditional options, none of which helped him. He sawed in half the initial body cast that had provided such relief out of irritation. He used it to brace his back when sitting in his automobile or office chair, covering it with foam and a pillowcase. The discomfort gradually faded.
In 1980, work on his final design began. The current design is merely 907 grammes in weight (32 ounces). It's an ergonomically correct portrayal of the contours of the spine, made of stiff yet resilient polycarbonates and reinforced plastics and upholstered in foam and hypo-allergenic fabric. ObusForme was the name he gave it and his company.
