How to use ADL Bed Pan

Allow the person to sit up or lift their hips slightly, then move the bedpan beneath them. Alternatively, if you have assistance, assist the client in lifting their hips while your assistant slides the bedpan under their buttocks. You can also assist the person in turning to the side. Help them turn back onto the bedpan by gently pressing the bedpan on his or her bottom.

• If it is safe to do so, exit the room to offer the person privacy.
• Maintain control of the bedpan and assist the client in rolling away from you. Set the bedpan to the side with care.
• If necessary, assist the person in wiping.
• Empty the contents of the bedpan into the toilet.
• Using a disinfectant diluted with water, rinse and wash the bedpan. A little sprayer that connects to the toilet water supply may be useful. Dry the bedpan by hand or by allowing it to air dry.
• Remove your gloves and discard them.
