About AMG
Allan M. Goldenberg launched AMG Medical Inc. in 1972, and the company is now in its fourth decade. Allan had previously spent ten years at a small surgical instrument import company in a range of roles. Allan confronted the difficulty of launching a firm without finance, driven by a deep desire to run his own company. Despite this, he established "AMG Sales Agency Inc." in his parents' garage and approached a number of overseas surgical instrument contacts who displayed faith and support by supplying products on a limited open account basis.
As a result of his many journeys to New York City, where he built new ties with entrepreneurs who educated him about the medical sundry sector, Allan's vision grew beyond surgical equipment. Ben Topor joined Allan in 1978 to handle AMG's administrative problems. Ben had previously completed his studies at McGill University and worked at his family's business. Allan concentrated on importing and selling during the early 1980s, while Ben concentrated on finance and administration. Throughout the period, they were assisted by a team of about five dedicated professionals.
AMG's product line had grown to over 1000 goods by the early 1980s, with medical/surgical and diagnostic categories accounting for the majority of sales. Allan took his first journey to Asia in 1982. AMG created numerous key new supplier ties as a result of this trip, allowing the company to expand into new business categories such as disposable gloves, non-woven healthcare items, and wood products like tongue depressors and cotton-tipped applicators. AMG's strategic focus shifted substantially in 1985, when management saw an opportunity to serve Canada's growing home healthcare industry.
AMG released its first "Full-Line" Catalogue in 1988, with over 2000 goods. The Full-Line Catalogue consolidated AMG's position as a "one-stop" source of supplies for medical dealers across Canada by combining all of the company's products into one simple communication vehicle. In 1989, Robert Oringer became a partner in AMG after his company, Technolab, merged with AMG.
The company also invested in new computer systems in the same year, including a state-of-the-art in-house desktop publishing capabilities in its marketing department. The company's first "Home Healthcare Catalogue" was created by this department. Can-Am originated and developed the private label diabetes care market in the United States in the early 1990s, eventually expanding its services beyond lancets to include a full line of ancillary diabetes care items.
Can-Am Care had grown to more than $25 million in sales by 1998, when it was sold to Waltham, Massachusetts-based publicly traded Selfcare, Inc. (Inverness Medical Technology Inc. was eventually renamed Selfcare.)
