Moist Heat
Moist heating pads are designed to provide moist heat therapy for temporary relief of back pain, muscle aches, joint stiffness, and more. They come in different sizes, but most are considered medium size.
Moist Heating Pad Benefits
Moist heating pad benefits include the fact that it penetrates the skin much more deeply than dry heat. The moist heat also offers a soothing sensation and increased comfort. This is due to the increase of blood flow, which brings warmth and healing to an injured area, as well as a reduction in the body’s production of cortisol.*
How is Moist Heat Applied?
Often, people are looking for ways to stay safe during the winter that are not only warm, but also easy. Plenty of heating pads can be found at department stores, but they are often just as complicated as the original issue. They either need to be plugged in or need water to provide heat; the water heating pad often needs a layer between it and your skin.*
A physiotherapist may use a hydrocollator, which heats pads in a thermostatically controlled water bath, to apply moist heat to their patient's sore muscles. Moist heat is applied to provide temporary relief for localized pain or discomfort by creating an artificial fever while simultaneously increasing the blood flow to the area. The process helps break up muscle spasms and can also stimulate lymphatic drainage, which removes excess fluids and toxins that could lead to infection.*
